It´s a magical world
The surfaces, shapes and colors of basic commodities and toys are treasure chests of our memories, they shape our dreams and thoughts - they are the artefacts of life. I summon the visual sphere of childhood and converts the icons of perception in my paintings.

The object is exposed to the eye of the beholder and reveals a realm of connotations. But JBD removes the objects from this context and returns the item to its original state. As a time capsule it remains on its own, all encompassing and overblown. At times, the structure of the object is embodied in the canvas - physical elements stick out that define the shape and let the model cars grow outside the frame.

The striking colors abstract the work from the the physical item to create its own iconic identity. For a small boy, the toy car is one of his first possessions and therefore a crucial reference point to the physical and material world. By handling the object, he discovers shapes, shadows and sinister faces. The model car defines the dimensions, the textures and colors, through which we perceive the world. The object becomes a fragment of our surroundings and teaches us about life by letting us hold it in our hands.

This stream of perception is crucial to JBD's work. Like observing and associating, the act of painting is a sentimental process for him. When an idea appears, he dedicates himself to it with immediacy and obedience - only then can the object unfold its magic.
